Homemade #4 – Tortillas

Posted by Ben On May - 5 - 2009 Under News

Better late than never, that’s what they say. I should’ve posted this last week, but I really don’t know where my head was. But finally here it is. The round up for last month’s Homemade event and the challenge for this month. Let’s start with the roundup of Homemade Bars. We didn’t have many entries last month. It is in part my fault because I kept myself away from the blog-o-sphere for awhile. But the entries we got are just amazing:

Finsmom made Superpower Granola Bars with Dried Blueberries and Raspberries:

Soma made Sweet Peanut Brittle Bars:

Yasmeen made Well-Balanced Chocolate Granola Bars:

Psychgrad made Peanut Butter Banana Bars:

Thank you very much for participating! Your recipes will give us more inspiration to try new homemade bars.

And now to this month’s challenge. I had two options for this month. I have been making this two things at home for a while, but since today is cinco de mayo and taking in consideration my friend Joan’s suggestiong of making something Mexican, I decided this month we all could make our own tortillas. Nothing represents better Mexican cuisine than corn tortillas. They were consumed by the native peoples of Mesoamerica long before the arrival of Europeans and they are still the most important food in the Mexican diet.

Their popularity has increased in the US and Europe where Mexican food is now more common. Even though the original pre-Columbian tortilla was made with corn, the wheat variations are more common in the U.S. and their popularity has increased in Mexico.

Homemade challenges you this month to make your own tortillas at home. I prefered corn tortillas because of their flavor and nutritional value, but you are welcome to submit flour tortillas to the event as well as how you ate them, tacos? quesadillas? enchiladas? nachos? The possibilities are endless!

You might be wondering why the tortillas in my pictures are green. And that’s because they are spinach corn tortillas, an idea that I got from my friend Capricornio when he made a green lasagna with green tortillas. Next week I will post the recipe for this unique tortillas and what I did with them. For now you can get some ideas on how to make your own here, here and here.

Remember the simple rules to participate in this event are:

  1. Prepare any kind of tortilla at home.
  2. Take pictures (if possible) and post about it on your blog (If you don’t have a blog skip to step 3)
  3. Post the permalink to your entry on this topic of the forum. If you don’t have a blog post your picture and recipe there.
  4. You might send as many entries as you wish. Tortillas are a versatile ingredient that you can use for many different dishes.
  5. The deadline is May 31st.

I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

¡Buen provecho!

O, I have to make these!! I will definitely be trying to make my own tortilla’s. I totally love them and you’re right that Mexican food is quite popular in Europe these days. You can buy most things you need right in the supermarket, so I’m gonna give this a go for this months challenge!!

You set the bar pretty high with those beautiful green spinach tortillas! But, on the other hand, you were good enough to provide some helpful links so I think I’m going to give it a try. Looks like fun. Is there a due date? Or just any time during the month of May?

Ben what a fantastic idea. Spinach tortillas. I’ve tried making my own, but they never come out round! Square, triangular, you name it. Anything but round. I guess as long as you can eat them it’s OK. Hey good buddy, so when is your birthday?????

Your green tortillas are so pretty and my traditional version is so bleh. They tasted great though! Crossing my fingers that actually submitting something for Homemade works. *such a slacker…*
