Mango jam and an excuse to tango

Putting upWhen I saw that Pixie and Rosie were hosting a food event called Putting Up (which encourages you to make your own jam, jelly, conserve, marmalade, chutney, curds, butter, pickles, etc.) I thought it was going to be difficult to come up with something to participate. However, I realized this past weekend that it is not so difficult after all and that I have been making my own jams, jellies and conserves for a long time for empanadas. Did I ever mentioned that I had (still kinda have) a small bakery run from my own kitchen?

I mentioned on this post that I received a crate of mangoes courtesy of the National Mango Board. The only issue with having a lot of mangoes at once is that some will ripe sooner and if you don’t eat them they go bad. That’s why I decided to make a mango jam for Pixie’s and Rosie’s event and use it for sweet empanadas for Rebecca’s (of From Argentina with Love) event Empanada of the Month.

Every time I think of Argentina I think of tango. Tango is such a beautiful genre that I look for any excuse to listen to it and watch gorgeous and graceful dancers execute it with so much passion and drama. The history of tango, like history in general, fascinates me. It was born in the poor districts of Buenos Aires, Argentina and Montevideo, Uruguay in the late 1800s and spread to the upper classes and then Europe through Paris. Carlos Gardel, you are listening to his song Adios Muchachos, is probably the most important player in tango history. I could go on and on about tango, but we are here to talk about food.

This is what I did for the mango empanadas:

Mango Jam ingredients:

  • 2 large mangoes, cut
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks

Just boil all the ingredients in a pot until jam gets thick. Stir constantly.

I always make puff pastry empanadas. Click here to see how I prepare my own puff pastry and here or here for a more detailed guide to make the emapandas. Now that the empanadas are ready, shall we tango?

Buen provecho!

  1. Peter Said,

Ben, are you trying to tell us you’re going to be on Dancing With the Stars?

I’m in…mango’s one of my fave fruits, so the jam would be quite good on my morning toast.

Tango? How cool is that? And the mango jam looks and sounds totally excellent. I can see it spread over a lovely creamy tart. No fat, of course. And definitely no calories, right? YUM!

Mango is my number one fruit! I wish we only had 6 months of Summer and the full enjoyment of mangoes… However, I’ve never made any mango jam. This sounds and looks interesting with added spices in it. Exotic!!
