I keep half barrels in my back yard for herbs. The chives come up every year as does the thyme. I also let thyme grow wild in my rock garden as it creates a beautiful ground cover and grows like weeds.
There's alot of literature about what grows well together and it's a good idea to look into that.
Gardening is fun and relaxing - the weeding is a pain.

I gave up my garden 5 years ago when I started moving into condos Ben. My advice to keep the weeds down is to completely cover the garden with black, but porous landscape carpeting...NOT the kind that prevents anything from growing ever and so water cannot permeate either...but the porous kind. Where you plant tomatoes, peppers, etc cut a little X in the carpeting and place your plant. For rows cut a slit with a T on either end and plant your seeds. NO WEEDING all summer long and yet you have wonderful fresh veggies all year round and less time spent. FABULOUS!!!!

Start with something easy and low maintenance like Rosemary. It'll grow just about anywhere and you get the benefit of having fresh herbs at the ready when you want them. Carrots, Potatoes, Parsnips and onions are also pretty easy to grow with a minimum of maintenance.

Good luck with your garden!
